College-bound families throughout Southwestern-Central Ohio have supported Compass Education Strategies since we began assisting client families in 2009. Here’s what college-bound families value about our firm:
- Personalized services – Our services begin with understanding the student and parents. We believe that going to college (or any new school setting for that matter) involves the family, not only the student. All of our recommendations are informed by what best meets the needs of the client family.
- Customized college lists – We consider three key areas for selecting colleges where students would be most likely to thrive and graduate – academic, social/community, and financial. Therefore, we do not have any favored colleges that we recommend to every student.
- More family time – There are countless websites related to college and 3,500+ campuses around the US. Who has time to spend keeping up with admissions trends, application deadlines, and hundreds of campus visits? We do! Our firm lives and breathes admissions and education research. Therefore, we are reading, publishing practical insight, meeting with parents, and visiting campuses around the country year-round.
- The parent-teen relationship is stronger – We don’t mean to scare you, but the admissions process is stressful. The relationship with your college-bound teen is best managed by parents being parents, not a college counselor. Our client parents avoid the fights over essays and where to apply!
Why we opened a Center
Prior to opening the Compass College Advisory Center in 2012, we met with students and parents all over the Miami Valley in homes, libraries, schools, and Panera Bread (love the cinnamon crunch bagel!). The center allows us now to meet in a central location. In the upcoming months, we will also host parent talks and our popular essay writing retreat at the Compass College Advisory Center. All are welcome to browse our library of viewbooks from boarding schools and colleges around the country.
Our center director is Dr. Pamela Ellis. She is the founder of Compass Education Strategies. Compass is an education research firm that assists relocating families with their education options in new communities and helps students find and apply to education settings where they can thrive and graduate. Compass was recently awarded the 2011 Small Business Achievement Award from the Dayton SCORE chapter. Dr. Pamela has over 20 years experience in the private sector and field of education with state education agencies, school districts, and higher education. She received her BA from Stanford University and a Masters of Business Administration from The Tuck School at Dartmouth College. She completed her PhD from the Stanford University School of Education. Dr. Pamela is also the voice of The Education Doctor Radio Show which features practical and relevant education issues.
